Cyreena Boston Announces Bid for State House
Portland, OR, August 20, 2007- Now that Cyreena Boston has announced her run for the Oregon House, District 45 has a unique opportunity to keep its energetic and effective leadership in Salem. In the coming May Primary Election, the voters in HD 45 will have a chance to elect one of its own.
The Parkrose native stated, "As a resident in the Sumner neighborhood, I see how the lack of affordable housing, crowded schools, and health and safety issues challenge our friends, families, and neighbors everyday. I am running to solve these issues through collaborative and progressive law making."
Cyreena Boston grew up an activist in NE Portland neighborhoods. This young woman first began knocking on doors for the Portland Organizing Project, a coalition that worked to protect NE neighborhoods from gang crime and to provide emergency services. Her participation quickly expanded into grassroots leadership when she went beyond volunteer work in neighborhood parks, to organizing food co-ops, summer day camps, and voter registration drives.
This Spelman College alumna returned to NE Portland after her college education to work as a social worker in Multnomah County SUN Schools, to help improve the lives of children. Then, under DNC Chairman Gov. Howard Dean, Cyreena was the direct voice of Oregon Democrats to the Democratic Party of Oregon as its Constituency Director.
"We need a front-line activist and credible voice in Salem to stand up for vital services, which should not just be renewed - but improved." Cyreena plans to affect change in policies related to housing, education and the delivery of social services, such as universal health care and Head Start funding. An active member of the Democratic Party, she will add a strong voice to the House Democratic Caucus that is putting Oregon back on track.
